A recording of a typical busy, yet peaceful later afternoon sound-scape of a small midwestern town at 5:30pm on a weekday. This was recorded on tuesday may 24th, 2016 using the marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me66 microphones. . . True stereo recording. You will hear the delightful sound of neighborhood kids playing a friendly - or sometimes not so friendly - game of wiffleball which adds to the reflective nature of this recording. The trilling bird calling towards the end of the recording is the beautiful little, rusty-capped chipping sparrow. These chipping sparrows converge on the midwest around this time and their calls can be mistaken as an insect. This is one of the very few canarian permanent waterfalls. It is located in los tilos forest, a biosphere reserve within las nieves natural park in la palma (canary islands, spain). It's about 25 meters tall and flows into a gorge covered by a thick laurel forest (laurisilva), a tropical ecosystem full of trees and ferns resembling jurassic park. Outside my gym is a large tree or bush and every night in the summer months a swarm of sparrows invades the bush. Hundreds of birds disappear into the thick hedge for the night. The sound is unique and overwhelming. There is an sporadic wind sound but a few long sections without.

By mid-september a lot of the migrant songbirds have left southern illinois, along with their songs. But, the insects and their choruses abound. This mockingbird comes every spring to a tree outside my window in jackson heights, ny--a bustling part of queens. It could use some noise reduction, but its not bad and there's a lot of variety. This guys really goes to town with a hundred variations of chirps.
